Ramesh Sippy’s SHOLAY is widely celebrated as one of the greatest Hindi films of all times. A standout within the canon of Bollywood blockbusters, it inspired the distinctly Indian ‘Masala Western’ sub-genre, squeezing itself somewhere in between the stylistic and narrative legacies of Sergio Leone and Akira Kurosawa. The film, an opera-like spectacle of last-man-standing showdowns, slapstick comedy, forbidden love, family drama, and unflinching heroism, tells the tale of two ride-or-die outlaws Jai and Veeru, hired by a retired police officer to track down the villainous bandit, Gabbar Singh and restore peace to his rural farming village.
