Reel Ideas: Measuring Up With TallBoyz – Reel Asian International Film Festival
Come and hang out with the cast of TallBoyz as we deep dive into their creative processes, what it was like to produce the show with CBC, and what it takes to translate comedy sketches into television. Panel features Franco Nguyen, Guled Abdi, Vance Banzo, and Tim Blair.
This event will be a moderated artist talk followed by a reception with cash bar in effect.
Speakers:
Guled Abdi is a Toronto based comedian, writer and 1/4 of the multi-award winning sketch troupe TallBoyz II Men. He’s performed at OFF-JFL, Montreal Sketchfest and the Toronto Fringe Festival. You can catch Guled performing weekly at Bad Dog Theatre as part of Drosselmeyer or at random bars you didn’t know had a comedy show.
Vance Banzo is a Saulteaux/Cree comedian, actor, and writer born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. Currently residing in Toronto, Ontario, Vance is a proud member of award-winning sketch comedy troupe, Tallboyz II Men. Vance is a band member of Fishing Lake First Nation, Saskatchewan.
Franco Nguyen is a comedian, writer and actor. He is a proud Bob Curry fellow, a Tim Sims finalist, an alumnus of Toronto’s Second City Touring Company and has showcased in Chicago for the NBC Breakout Fest and StandUP NBC. His one-person show “GOOD MORNING VIET MOM” received critical acclaim and sold-out runs at the Toronto Fringe Festival, the Next Stage Festival and was picked up by Cahoots Theatre for a cross Canada tour. He has been featured in the Huffington Post, CBC’s Exhibitionist and Thời Báo Media (hay quá!). Franco is currently completing his MFA in film at York University, and has four 99 rated Create-a-players in NBA 2K11.
Tim Blair was born and raised (in that order) in Toronto, Ontario. At the age of 15, he fell in love with comedy after being forced to do stand-up for a school assignment. Since then he’s graduated from Humber college’s Comedy program. Been apart of the casts of Second City’s House Company, The Bad Dog Featured Players, and The Sketchersons. Performed at festivals such as JFL42, OFF-JFL, and the NBC Breakout Festival. And formed the multi-award winning sketch troupe TallBoyz II Men. Tim regularly does stand-up, sketch, and improv around Toronto.

Andrew Phung is an actor, improviser, and emcee hailing from Calgary, Alberta. Andrew has been performing improv at the Loose Moose Theatre Company since he was 16. He is an alumnus of Avenue Magazines Top 40 under 40 list and is the winner of the 2016 Canadian Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor/Guest Star in a Comedy Series for his work on KIM’S CONVENIENCE. His recent credits include The Beaverton and “Little Italy. Andrew is father to two wonderful boys, and husband to the amazing Tamara. Andrew also has over 400 pairs of sneakers…no, seriously.
