Creative Visions Panel: 20 Years of Hong Kong Cinema
From 1997 to 2017, Hong Kong cinema has been in transition. While internally celebrated masters like Wong Kar Wai, Johnnie To and Ann Hui still actively produce new work, new auteurs such as Fruit Chan, Pang Ho Cheung, Stephen Chow and Heiward Mak have emerged. While local cinema continues to thrive, co-productions with mainland China have drastically altered the industry landscape. As part of the Creative Visions series, this panel aims to tackle two timely questions: what defines Hong Kong cinema now, and what will shape Hong Kong cinema in the next twenty years? This talk is part of Reel Asian’s Reel Ideas initiative.
Our panelists include King-Wei Chu, Bart Testa, and Alice Shih, moderated by Betty Xie.

King-Wei Chu King-Wei Chu is co-director of Asian programming at the Fantasia International Film Festival. He also directed Flesh for Kung Fu with Gordon Liu as part of the award winning anthology Frankenstein Unlimited film. He’s also consultant for the Montreal Film Society and its archives. King-Wei is based in Montreal where he grew up in a family run Chinese cinema and graduated from Concordia University in Marketing and Communications. He also owns a large collection of Hong Kong cinema posters, lobby cards and 35mm material. |

Bart Testa is an Associate Professor (Teaching) at Cinema Studies Institute, University of Toronto. His courses cover a wide range, including Experimental Film, Science Fiction, Genre and Narration, Action Cinema and Auteur Directors. Since 2002, he has taught his Chinese Cinemas course in both Hong Kong and Toronto. Testa has organized several conferences and film festivals with the Asian Institute (Munk Centre, UofT). He has published journal articles and anthologized essays on diverse film topics. He is the author of Back and Forth: Early Cinema and the Avant-Garde and co-editor of Pier Paolo Pasolini in Contemporary Perspective. |

Alice Shih Alice Shih is a Toronto-based film journalist, a member of the Toronto Film Critic Association. She is also an advisory board member of the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, and a regular contributor for Swedish Press. Her critique on films can also be heard on Fairchild Radio, the national Chinese radio broadcaster in Canada. She specializes in world films, especially films from Asia and the Asian Diaspora. She received an honours degree in Film Studies from Ryerson University. Her commercial script “Unsupervised Viewing” is the recipient of the Walter Bell Memorial Merit Award for Creative and Human Excellence. She has been translating written works of Jia Zhangke including the book Jia Zhangke Speaks Out, published by Bridge21 Publication. |
