The Bluffs Gallery (1859 Kingston Road, Scarborough)
Commissioned by Reel Asian, Rites of Passage is a collaborative film and photo exhibit. Five Asian Canadian female filmmakers Alison Kobayashi, Casey Mecija, May Truong, Shasha Nakhai, and Leslie Supnet bring to life personal home videos that reflect on pivotal moments of their own cultural bringing. Photographs from each filmmaker’s piece will be exhibited at The Bluffs Gallery for the Rites of Passage: Photo Exhibit.

Nari features an experimental short film about Lakshmi Shankar (Ravi Shankar’s sister-in-law) and her daughter Viji, followed by a multimedia performance with live vocals, Indian Percussion, and Gingger Shankar’s unique double violin set to an entrancing blend of hip-hop, high energy solos and electronica infused with Viji’s never-before-heard recordings rooted in the Hindustani vocal tradition.
