At 99 years old, Grace Lee Boggs has spent most of her life involved with many of the major American social movements of the last century. Reel Asian is so proud to have screened AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY: THE EVOLUTION OF GRACE LEE BOGGS last year, where it went on to win the Best Feature Film Award at the festival. The film documented Grace’s life through her work as a social activist, philosopher, feminist and writer.
Here are the photos from last year’s packed screening – director Grace Lee was in attendance for intro and Q&A.
The team behind AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY: THE EVOLUTION OF GRACE LEE BOGGS sent a message to friends and supporters to help contribute to Grace’s hospice fees. All DVD purchases of AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY: THE EVOLUTION OF GRACE LEE BOGGS for the month of December 2014 will be donated towards Grace’s hospice care. See the message below:
I had a chance to visit Grace Lee Boggs recently in Detroit.
As some of you may know, Grace has been in hospice care since September. We held hands as she talked about subjects as diverse as aging and dying, growing up Chinese American in Queens in the 1920s, and how we need to listen to the young people of Ferguson. It was a strain for her to speak, but at one point she expressed how nice it was for us to be there with her as she struggles with what it means to be 99 years old.
I’m sharing this story because Grace’s friends and colleagues have set up a trust to help defray the expenses of her very costly long-term 24-hour care — which allows her to make her final transition at home, surrounded by those closest to her. Her monthly costs are $8000 — and her own personal savings are being rapidly depleted.
Here at American Revolutionary, we have committed to donate all of the proceeds from our DVD sales for the month of December towards Grace’s care. If you don’t have your own copy yet, this is a great opportunity to re-connect to Grace’s story and to give back to someone who has been fighting for all of us. Having just watched the film again with a Detroit audience this weekend, in light of Ferguson the conversations continue to be lively and inspired.
If you would prefer to donate directly to this fund, either a one-time donation or on a recurring basis, you can find more information here.
