Reel Asian and the Toronto Japanese Film Festival are hungry to present What’s For Dinner, Mom? Based on the essays of Tae Hitoto who was born in Taiwan and raised in Japan in her teens, this film reminds us all of our mothers and the love that goes into home cooking. Director Mitsuhito Shiraha in attendance.

As Tae and Yo clear out their childhood home, they find a box full of recipes and letters written by their mother who died 20 years ago. Being born from a Taiwanese father and Japanese mother, they find out the struggles their mother endured moving from Japan to Taiwan. The loss of family and friends. The death of her husband and battling cancer. They reminisce about mom’s food and together they recreate her dishes.
