Reel Asian is co-presenting On the Rim of the Sky at the Hot Docs Film Festival on April 27!
We are proud to co-present at the 22nd annual Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival! Director Hongjie Xu tells a “first contact” story of the isolated Gulu village in China’s Sichuan province that is delicately located on the edge of a cliff. On the Rim of the Sky follows Shen, a substitute teacher who had hopes of becoming a real teacher at the village’s primary school until a young, idealist appeared to invasively reform Gulu. The Hot Docs Film Festival runs from April 23-May 3. More information here.

SYNOPSIS: In the China’s Sichuan province, Gulu village is without electricity or contact with the outside world until a trail is built in 2004. For over 26 years, substitute teacher Shen has happily presided over the village’s primary school, until a young volunteer teacher named Bao appears. Bao arrives in Gulu filled with utopian visions, Che Guevara-inspired revolutionary ideas and Don Quixote delusions. A story of intergenerational misunderstanding and disrespect in a microcosm, On the Rim of the Sky is an epic take on outsider versus insider, youth versus experience and trust versus suspicion.
