This spring, Reel Asian is bringing back SEE YOURSELF HERE, a nation-wide contest for Asian Canadians to tell narratives based on the Asian Canadian experience on screen. Submitted videos will be shared across social media and select pieces will play on the big screen at #ReelAsian23 in November. We encourage participants of all experience levels, even those with little to no filmmaking experience, to express your unique voices and share your stories through the screen. Create a short skit, vlog, music video, experimental video, or animation to tell us about your relationship and connection to your heritage, what kind of Asian culture (pop or otherwise) influences you, or a quirky/sentimental family story. We want to see you tell us whatever you think makes you unique!
Submission Period:
May 1 – 31, 2019
Process:
- Upload your entry to Instagram or YouTube via a public account between May 1 – 31
- Hashtag the entry with #RASeeYourselfHere
- Complete a submission form
Contest Rules:

- Contest is open to Asian Canadians in Canada aged 13 and up
- This includes Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and refugees of those who are descendants of people from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, China, East Timor, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam
- Videos must be 1 minute (60 seconds) in length or shorter. If selected for festival screening, you may add an extra five seconds for credits and titles (optional).
- Participants must upload their video to Instagram or YouTube, and include the hashtag #RASeeYourselfHere.
- Organization-based Instagram/YouTube accounts (ie. Associations, Student Clubs, Community Groups) may submit videos on behalf of members provided proper accreditation is used.
- Account and entry must be public (Private or Unlisted entries will not qualify)
- Videos can be in any language but non-English works must include English subtitles
- All participants must have all rights to the video’s content, footage, artwork, and music
- Contest is open to Asian Canadians in Canada aged 13 and up
- Only videos uploaded to Instagram or YouTube between May 1 – May 31 will be considered
- Audience Choice voting finishes May 31 at 5pm EST
Prize:
- One winner will be based on likes generated by Instagram/YouTube audiences – the earlier your piece is submitted, the more time to generate viewership
- One winner will be chosen by Reel Asian’s programming team
- Videos by selected winners will play before a film presentation at the 23rd edition of the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival
- Selected winners will be accredited to attend the 23rd edition of the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival
- Selected winners will be given artist fees for screening their work at the festival
- Winners from outside of the Toronto area are eligible for discounted rates with our hospitality partners
