Chris Chong Chan Fui, a long-time friend and participant at Reel Asian has taken the world by storm. Chan Fui has exhibited his short films Tuesday Be My Friend and Pool at Reel Asian in 2006 and 2007. He has also received the Best Canadian Short Film Award at TIFF in 2008 with Block B. Since then, he has received numerous awards in film and art and still continues to exhibit his works internationally. His moving images and installation works have been shown in numerous galleries in Asia in the past year. We are happy to see his work recognized in Asia.
Here’s what he’s been up to lately since our last check-in at TIFF:
2016 RECIPIENT OF SMITHSONIAN FELLOWSHIP AWARD
Congratulations! Chris Chong Chan Fui was recently awarded the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship Award and will be conducing a research project with the museum on moving image methodologies as of Spring 2016 in D.C, Washington.
ENDEMIC
This installation features rare, manufactured reproductions of rare endemic orchids native to Mount Kinabalu in Borneo, Malaysia. ENDEMIC looks to expand the scientific definition of the term endemic / native in relation to industrious migration.
The installation is currently being exhibited at YEBISU International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions at Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography this Feb 2016.
BADMINTON TRAINING
One of the newer pieces from the artist, Badminton Training takes Malaysian elite athletes in their highly respected sport of Badminton in multiple forms of spectatorship on the court.

BLOCK B
“After Utopia seeks to ask where have we located our Utopias, and how we have tried to bring into being the utopias we have aspired to.” BLOCK B is a single channel installation shot in Brickfields, Malaysia.”
Block B makes its way into Asia since its screening at TIFF 2008 and was shown at the Singapore Art Museum from May-October 2015.

Chris Chong Chan Fui is a Malaysian-Canadian filmmaker. He has written and directed a number of short films and has worked in film, television and animation production. Chris’s career began in Canada where he directed a number of experimental hand-processed films and screened his work in over 20 festivals on the global circuit. Chris’s Tuesday Be My Friend screened at RA in 2006 and Pool(2007) won TIFF’s Best Canadian Short Film Award.
